Massage therapy and NMT (Neuro Muscular Therapy) are systems of structured and specific palpation or movement of the soft tissue of the body utilized for the recovery of acute and chronic pain syndromes. The purpose of massage is to enhance the general health and well-being of the recipient; however, massage does not include the diagnosis of a specific pathology, the prescription of pharmaceuticals, spinal manipulation or acts of physical therapy that are outside the scope of massage therapy. NMT is a specialized form of manual therapy that utilizes static ischemic compression on specific myofascial points otherwise known
as trigger points to relieve pain and discomfort.
A trigger point consists of hypersensitive bands of muscle tissue that radiate pain along specific referral patterns throughout one’s body. By stimulating these “knots” or fascial adhesions to release, the pain patterns caused by these sore spots begin to fade. Combined with the use of wet heat and simple stretching routines at home one can feel a noticeable change in their situation in a relatively short period of time.
The last decade has witnessed an awakening in massage therapy, however there is still much to be discovered. The benefits of massage and NMT are diverse and widespread. Not only is it well known that these therapies can address pain of all types from acute to chronic, it is also a great resource to treat conditions such as stress, anxiety, depression, blood pressure, and immune system disorders.
During the first session, I will ask you to discuss and clarify any condition that may affect your health and comfort.
We will discuss the desired outcome of the session and determine which areas of the body require massage.
You will be properly draped (covered with a sheet or towel) for warmth, comfort and privacy during the entire session.
Clients should communicate immediately if they feel any discomfort so that another approach may be assessed and taken.
Massage and bodywork are most effective when the body is not resisting.
When receiving deep tissue manipulation, communication is paramount to avoiding injuries from application of techniques employed, especially when utilizing gua sha, hot stone, and cupping.
Post treatment, there may be residual red marks from the cups and gua sha. They tend to dissipate over time and are able to go away quicker with physical movement and exercise.
For athletes and those needing performance enhancement, plenty of fluids, icing, stretching, and rest are necessary post therapy for improved healing and recovery.
